Wilderness First Aid 2 Hour Clinic

A 2-hour Wilderness First Aid clinic built for mountain bikers and hikers — practical, hands-on, and potentially life-saving.

Why This Clinic Exists

Most outdoor emergencies don't happen near a trailhead. They happen miles in, with no cell service and a decision that can't wait for help to arrive.

This clinic exists because the gap between "I hiked/rode that trail a hundred times" and "I knew exactly what to do" is smaller than you think — and completely closeable in two hours.

Whether you're solo on a ridgeline or deep in the backcountry with friends, this is the training that turns a scary situation into a manageable one.

What You'll Learn

This is a 2-hour, skills-based clinic designed for real scenarios in the summer outdoor environment. Here's what I cover:

Know Before You Go - Weather, route planning, and the decisions that happen before you ever leave the trailhead.

Communication - How to call for help, what to communicate, and what to do when you can't.

Scene Safety - How to assess and manage an emergency scene in a summer environment without putting yourself at risk.

Performance Triad + The Human Animal - Understanding how your body responds to stress, exertion, and extreme conditions — and why it matters.

Heat - Sunburn, dehydration, and hyponatremia — what to watch for and how to respond.

Cold - Hypothermia and frostbite — recognizing early signs and taking action.

Physical Injuries -Soft tissue injuries, sprains, strains, and fractures — hands-on knowledge for the trail.

Medical Emergencies -What to do when something serious happens and help is far away.

What to Carry - We'll walk through exactly what belongs in your kit and how to use it — heat packs, rehydration salts, emergency shelter, gauze, bandages, a SAM splint, tourniquet, hemostatic agent, and more. You'll leave knowing not just what to pack, but why every item earns its weight.

Meet Your Instructor

I'm Courtney Lewallen — expedition guide, leadership facilitator, and coach. I've led over 15 international expeditions, traveled to 30+ countries, and guided people into the mountains, across oceans, and into new ways of seeing themselves.

Wilderness medicine has been part of my work since 2009. I've taught Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder courses for over 17 years, including through Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities (SOLO) — one of the most respected wilderness medicine programs in the country. I've seen what preparedness looks like in the field, and I built this clinic around what actually matters when things go sideways.

At Traverse Beyond, my work is about guiding people to their growth edge — whether that's crossing a mountain range or navigating an unexpected emergency miles from help. This clinic is an extension of that mission.
