Rwanda, Africa

12 Days. An Experience of a Lifetime

Step into a bucket-list journey that goes beyond sightseeing. Over 12 days in Rwanda, you’ll trek through lush hills, encounter majestic silverback gorillas in their natural habitat, go on safari, and engage in meaningful service through Kids Play International, where sport is used to empower girls and educate boys in Rwanda for over 15 years. This isn’t just volunteering — it’s about real connection, learning from the people you meet, and truly experiencing a culture from the inside. You will be staying at safe and comfortable accommodations along your journey starting with the Park Inn by Radisson, and moving to the Quiet Haven Hotel in Nyanza. From there you will end up at Five Volcanoes Lodge and end at Ruzizi Game Loge and Karenje Bush Camp. The pricing is based on shared accommodation, however if you prefer a room to yourself, that is no problem!

This journey is designed for individuals ready to step out of their comfort zone and are willing to experience and delve into a new culture. This trip includes:

  1. Pre-trip introduction- you’ll connect with fellow participants, explore what you hope to gain from this experience, and I'll be there to answer any questions you have.
  2. During the trip- adventure, trekking, and cultural immersion will challenge your perspective, while intentional moments of rest and reflection create space for self-discovery, curiosity, and renewed vibrancy.
  3. Post-trip integration- After the journey, we'll connect again on how you want to show up fully in your life and apply what you’ve learned to step fully into the life you want.

This isn’t just travel. It’s a journey that inspires personal growth, meaningful connection, and inner strength. This journey is a transformative travel experience designed to blend conscious leadership, cultural immersion, service, adventure, and reflection.

Here’s what makes this trip unique:

  1. Full-Body Yes Approach
This isn’t just about seeing Rwanda — it’s about feeling it. Every step, every encounter, every reflection is designed to engage your mind, body, and heart.

  2. Intentional Integration of Growth Edge Work
I structure the journey to stretch your edges safely: stepping into discomfort, noticing your habitual patterns, and choosing conscious responses. By practicing leadership in real situations — from trekking the hills to immersive service projects — you learn not just about the world, but about yourself.

  3. Cultural Connection, Not Tourism
You'll engage in a meaningful service project, creating a lasting impact in Kids Play’s local community and learn and experience their way of life. By being in genuine relationship with others, you’ll see the impact of your choices, and the ways you show up in your own life.

  4. Reflection and Integration Built In
Transformation only sticks when there’s space to process it. Each part of the trip includes intentional rest, reflection, and journaling — and post-trip integration ensures the lessons come home with you.

I am excited to be partnering with Kids Play International, a non-profit that leverages the power of sport and the Olympic values in a safe space so girls and boys can positively challenge and shift harmful gender, social and cultural norms. KPI believes that young people are the long-term solution to changing deep-rooted beliefs, and building a healthy society where each gender’s contribution is highly valued.

Your safety and well-being are my top priorities. While no travel experience can come with a 100% guarantee, I am diligent in selecting safe, well-established providers for all travel, excursions, and activities. Every decision — from accommodations to guides to logistics — is made with your health, comfort, and security in mind. My goal is to ensure you can fully enjoy the trip, focus on the experience, and return home with your best memories, confident that you were well cared for throughout your journey. I am happy to answer any questions that you have.

Rwanda is considered one of the safest countries in Africa, renowned for its low crime rates and welcoming atmosphere. Kigali, the capital city, is known for its cleanliness, organised infrastructure, and friendly locals. The government prioritises security, maintaining a visible police presence and well-kept public spaces. Visitors can comfortably explore popular destinations like the Volcanoes National Park and Lake Kivu. As with any travel, it’s wise to take basic precautions, such as safeguarding personal belongings, but overall, Rwanda’s reputation as a safe and peaceful destination is well-deserved.

We fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL).

Rwanda is in central east Africa, bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

If you are a U.K. or U.S.A. citizen you will need a visa for Rwanda, and importantly for Rwanda the visa can be acquired on arrival to the Kigali airport.  If you are not a U.K. or U.S.A. citizen, please consult the Rwanda consulate or embassy nearest you for visa requirements to enter Rwanda.

It is recommended to make an appointment with your physician or a health care provider before leaving on any international trip.

-Anti-malarial drugs required / recommended (Malerone or Doxyclycline)

-Yellow Fever (optional)

-Cipro/ Z Pac prescription is good to have to help prevent GI maladies while on the trip.

-Make sure you have an updated MMR (Measles/mumps/rubella), DPT (Diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus) and poliovirus vaccine.

-Hepatitis A and B (optional)

-Typhoid (optional)

Refer to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website for the most updated list of required and recommended vaccinations.

The currency of Rwanda is the Rwandan Franc. IMPORTANT: Bring US dollars that are 2009 or NEWER. Rwanda will not exchange or give you a very poor exchange rate for old bills. It is best to bring at least $250 mainly $5’s and $10’s ($100), and $20’s are typically okay as well. The current exchange rate can be found at http://www.xe.com/currency/rwf-rwandan-franc.

Yes! It is required to purchase travel insurance before traveling with Traverse Beyond. I have resources for you upon request.

Rwanda is at a higher elevation than most African countries (1000m – 4500m) so thankfully the weather remains slightly cooler. You will typically need a light sweater in the morning and evening. There are two dry seasons and two wet seasons. We will be traveling during the dry season.

Testimonial

Lisa Foulger - Rwanda 2026 -

If you’re looking for a travel experience that transforms you—not just a vacation—I can’t recommend Courtney and Traverse Beyond highly enough.

I recently returned from an extraordinary two-week journey through Rwanda that touched me deeply—heart, body, and soul. Every part of the experience was thoughtfully designed and seamlessly executed, allowing us to be fully present for each moment of discovery.

Our journey had three unforgettable dimensions. First was meaningful volunteer service with Kids Play International, where we partnered with local children in rural communities, using sport to teach confidence, gender equality, self-worth, and teamwork. Together we learned, laughed, and played baseball, pickleball, and frisbee golf. It wasn’t about us serving them—it was about learning side by side and building genuine human connection.

The second was an awe-inspiring gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda’s northern mountains. Spending time in close proximity to these magnificent families as they fed, played, nurtured, and interacted with one another was one of the most humbling and profound wildlife encounters I’ve ever experienced.

Our final adventure took us on day and night game drives through Akagera National Park, where we were fortunate enough to see all of the Big Five. The sweeping safari landscapes, abundant wildlife, and peaceful beauty created moments of wonder I’ll never forget.

Courtney’s enthusiasm, curiosity, and genuine sense of adventure make her an exceptional guide. She has an incredible gift for creating experiences that are both adventurous and deeply meaningful. Every detail was handled effortlessly, and her partnerships with outstanding local guides gave us authentic access to the people, culture, wildlife, and breathtaking beauty of Rwanda.

What makes Traverse Beyond different is that the journey doesn’t end when you return home. I came back carrying a piece of Rwanda with me—a deeper appreciation for its people, its resilience, its natural beauty, and the joy that comes from stepping outside your comfort zone and into genuine connection.

For women seeking culturally rich, purpose-driven adventures in extraordinary places that many travelers never discover, I wholeheartedly recommend Courtney and Traverse Beyond. It’s far more than a trip—it’s an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase.
